Sports : Teen Tasered at Philadelphia Phillies game
on 2010/5/6 19:40:00 (349 reads)
Sports

(SkyNewswire.com)--- Philadelphia - A 17-year-old Pennsylvania boy was subdued by a Taser last night during a Phillies baseball game. He ran onto the field before the eighth inning, eluding security momentarily before being detained by a police officer wielding a Taser. Baseball fans have seen it before -- a fan either gets too drunk or excited and suddenly scampers across the field, as the crowd cheers him or her on. But last night in Philadelphia, where the Phillies battled St. Louis, a 17-year-old endured a shocking end to his mischief.

Steve Consalvi, of Gilbertsville, Pa., wore a red Phillies National League Champions T-shirt and khaki shorts, and ran around the outfield waving a white towel and eluding several security officers. Moments after swerving around a few outstretched arms, Consalvi was caught by a uniformed bicycle patrol officer wielding a Taser.
The officer deployed the Taser and the teen slid into the ground. He was soon detained by other officers. Consalvi was checked into Methodist Hospital and was later released with no injuries.

His mother told My Fox his behaviour was unusual. "He is a wonderful kid. This isn't like him." She added, "It was stupid, absolutely stupid."

Sports : 1on1 Boxing Fitness Fighter Wins Debut Match
on 2010/5/6 18:40:00 (106 reads)
Sports

(SkyNewswire.com)--- 1on1 Boxing Fitness fighter, Bruce Darby, won his amateur debut fight on Saturday at Putting on the Gloves for Cinco De Mayo in Prescott Valley in which he scored a second round knockdown on his way to winning by judges’ decisions. “The first round was a tossup and pretty much even, but just 20 seconds into the second round, Bruce took down his older, taller opponent,” said Darby’s coach and 1on1 Boxing Fitness owner Christopher Terry. “After the knock down, the guy didn’t want to trade punches with Bruce anymore, and the momentum of the fight shifted to Bruce’s favor.”

“Bruce won because he was the busier of the two fighters,” said Terry. “He was more aggressive and threw more punches.” Terry said while the win was a great start to Darby’s amateur career, it is also a stepping stone to examine and improve upon technique, skill and conditioning. “The amateurs is for gaining experience and perfecting your craft, so we take each fight in stride and improve through every bout whether he wins or loses,” said Terry. As for Darby’s next career move, Terry hopes to enter Darby in the Junior Olympics State Tournament May 15th and 16th.

Sports : First Annual HBCU NFL Combine Clears New Path for Impact Players Into Pro Football
on 2010/5/6 10:40:00 (97 reads)
Sports

(SkyNewswire.com)--- Standout players from the 105 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) throughout the U.S. are being invited to attend the first annual HBCU & Small College Pro Combine, May 21 through 23, 2010, at The Ford Stadium Complex at North Carolina A&T State University. The Combine is for draft eligible QB's, DB's RB's, TE's, LB's and Wide Outs. Events include the 40-yard dash, vertical jump, bench press, pull-ups, and agility drills. Former Director of NFL Football Operations, Gene Washington, is co-founder of the HBCU COMBINE event.

“The talent level at HBCU’s is stellar. Yet, the selection of only one player in this year’s NFL draft proves there is greater potential that is being overlooked. By hosting an HBCU Combine, our goal is to bring increased recognition to HBCU football programs and amplify the number of HBCU players on NFL rosters,” states Washington. As an undergraduate at Stanford, Gene Washington was one of 25 black students out of 10,000 students. He attended Stanford because of its concerted efforts to integrate minority students into the college community. During his NFL career with the 49ers and the Lions, he made four consecutive Pro Bowl appearances from 1969-1972. He was Director of NFL Football Operations from 1994-2009.

HBCU players are proven fruitful players for the National Football League. Great players like Walter Payton, Jerry Rice, Michael Strahan, Aeneas William and Shannon Sharpe have all come out of HBCUs. While achievements made by HBCU college players were recently acknowledged with the opening of the Black College Football Hall of Fame this past February in Atlanta, Georgia, the HBCU & Small College Pro Combine is creating one more avenue for recognition of players representing historically black colleges. “Few NFL players come from a historically black college. HBCU players bring an elevated level of pride to the league, knowing that they represent a select group. We wanted to give them a special venue to showcase their talent for NFL coaches and scouts, says Mark Bloomquist, Washington’s business partner and co-founder of the HBCU NFL COMBINE.

Sports : Liverpool v Benfica - as it happened
on 2010/5/5 7:50:02 (102 reads)
Sports

(SkyNewswire.com)--- Fernando Torres booked himself a semi-final return to Atletico Madrid with a brace that helped Liverpool overturn Benfica's first leg lead

Kick-off is at 8.05pm. Barry will be here from 7.30pm. In the meantime, why not catch up on what happened in last week's first leg, which Benfica won 2-1, then read this interesting post from Portuguese reader Lynxx, which was posted on our Today in Sport blog earlier.

"The Benfica view on this interesting tie is that they have the team to win in Anfield," he or she writes. "They have been building up a lot of confidence during this year's campaign and, although the Europa League is not their priority (winning the Portuguese league is the priority), the hunger for the glorious European nights of the past is a powerful feeling. Remember that Benfica is a very big club with a lot of history and not good enough results in the past 15-20 years. It is sometimes called in Portugal as the sleeping giant.

Sports : What to do about Jimmy Clausen
on 2010/4/26 11:00:00 (123 reads)
Sports

(SkyNewswire.com)--- Two days ago, I told you this would be a successful draft if the Chiefs picked good, solid players regardless of position because they are in need of an overall talent upgrade. I'm not backing off that now, particularly given that the Chiefs are off to a good start after picking Tennessee safety Eric Berry with their first-round selection. But I wrote those words never dreaming that Notre Dame QB Jimmy Clausen would be sitting there with the Chiefs three picks away in the second round. The Chiefs should have some special insight into Clausen as a player and as a person because of the Charlie Weis connection, so I guess if the Chiefs truly believe Clausen is one of the right 53 and makes them a better team, then I should advocate his selection when the Chiefs make the 36th overall pick this evening.

What I don't understand is how Clausen would make the Chiefs better. This is a team that won 10 games over the past three years because they are deficient at a lot of positions. So how does the Chiefs passing on, perhaps, Texas linebacker Sergio Kindle or Notre Dame wide receiver Golden Tate make them a better team?

Reasonable people can disagree whether Matt Cassel is the right quarterback for the Chiefs for the next several years but a couple points are indisputable. First, Cassel has been the right guy before when he's been in the right situation, so he can do it again. Second, the circumstances the Chiefs threw him into last year were so horrid that no quarterback could have thrived under them. The best course of action for the Chiefs regarding Cassel since they've already made the commitment to him is surround him with the best team possible and see if he can succeed then. If not, then the Chiefs are justified in going out and getting the next best thing. He's available every year.

Sports : Let the Storm start again on zero
on 2010/4/26 9:00:00 (104 reads)
Sports

(SkyNewswire.com)--- THE NRL has been accused of acting too hastily and ripping the heart out of the 2010 premiership by kicking Melbourne Storm out of the competition. Pressure was mounting on chief executive David Gallop last night from all areas of the game - including broadcasters Channel Nine - to consider hearing an appeal from the Storm if the disgraced club can offload $700,000 worth of players. The Sunday Telegraph can reveal senior players, including Origin stars Anthony Watmough, Johnathan Thurston and Kurt Gidley, support Melbourne being allowed to compete for points this year if they can release players and get under the cap. As emotional Storm coach Craig Bellamy said they would "stand and fight" and "not surrender", his beleaguered club won support from across the game. Nine boss David Gyngell has been in contact with Gallop every day, urging him to allow the Storm to restart the premiership from zero points.

The plan to reinstate Melbourne would work like this:
* Taking $700,000 out of their salary cap to bring the club back to what other clubs are spending;
* Pay out the contracts of three players for the remainder of the season;
* Using Brett White, Ryan Hoffman and Luke MacDougall as examples, you place them into a draft where all clubs can bid for their services. Because they are already paid by the Storm for 2010, rival NRL clubs would be invited to sign them for 2010 and for the next two years;
* Putting the Storm back to zero but allowing them to compete for competition points for the remainder of the season;
* Clubs that have already played the Storm in the opening six rounds would be given the two competition points.

Sports : 4 Tigers taken on day 2
on 2010/4/26 7:40:00 (115 reads)
Sports

(SkyNewswire.com)--- Four former LSU players were taken today in the final four rounds of the NFL draft. Two ex-Tigers were taken in the sixth round. The Philadelphia Eagles took running back Charles Scott with the 200th overall pick. Scott's selection came three picks after the Houston Texans took return specialist Trindon Holliday. Two former Tigers were selected in the fourth round.

The Saints swapped picks with Arizona, moving up seven spots to take LSU defensive tackle Al Woods at No. 123 overall. Arizona the 130th overall selection and a sixth-round pick (No. 201) in return. And the Washington Redskins selected Tiger linebacker Perry Riley with the fifth pick in the round at No. 103 overall. The tiny (5-foot-5), but speedy (4.34 40-yard dash) Holliday was mostly used as a running back for the Tigers but also returned punts and kicks.

He returned 22 kicks for 537 yards and 20 punts for 362 yards and a touchdown last season. He had 115 carries for 776 yards and seven receptions for 72 yards in his four-year career. Holliday was also a track star at LSU. Riley became only the second player selected by the Redskins in this year's draft. They chose Oklahoma tackle Trent Williams in the first round on Thursday and didn't have a selection in the second or third rounds on Friday.

Sports : James Lawton: As Pompey drown in debt, America offers a reminder of what 'league' really means
on 2010/4/26 7:00:00 (159 reads)
Sports

(SkyNewswire.com)--- It doesn't take a lot to remind you that so much of English football is a wasteland of anarchic greed and utter disregard for the concept of fair competition. Unfortunately, this week of all weeks, the point could hardly have been made more emphatically had it been delivered by a flaming arrow. That at least was the reaction here when Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini was announcing his plan to move for Fernando Torres at almost precisely the time the St Louis Rams, the most godforsaken team in the National Football League, were acquiring the services of the brilliant young quarterback Sam Bradford.

It meant there was a particularly poignant resonance to the fact that in a week when broken Portsmouth could as confidently contemplate a day trip to the moon as take a second glance at Torres, the weakest member of a rich and powerful league was again given huge encouragement. Obviously, there can be no direct comparison between the recruitment methods of a club like City, benefiting so dramatically from sudden wealth, and those that enabled the NFL's least successful team to sign the best college talent.

However, the fact that the Rams, who won only one game last season, had the right to make the No 1 draft pick just happens to embody a cherished principle. Underpinning Bradford's move to St Louis is the belief that, however wealthy and popular it is, a league will ultimately only be as strong as its weakest link. This is something English football might reasonably ponder at a time when Portsmouth's plight has been so grimly exposed, when, with supreme irony, the FA's head of integrity has decamped for embattled Fratton Park and its nightmare indictment of the Premier League, one which, according to its chief executive, Richard Scudamore, has no wider responsibility than doling out between £30m and £50m worth of TV largesse.

Sports : Arizona Cardinals top pick Dan Williams has come a long way in a year
on 2010/4/26 6:20:00 (129 reads)
Sports

(SkyNewswire.com)--- Over the past few days, Dan Williams made his first trips to New York and Arizona. But his longest journey lasted an entire year, ending Thursday night when the Cardinals selected him with the 26th pick in the draft. A year ago, Williams only dreamed of being a first-round pick. A defensive tackle at Tennessee, he was coming off a productive junior year, but nothing spectacular. A sterling senior season changed all that. "If you talked to me this time last year, I was (projected) a free agent, seventh round," Williams said after a news conference at the Cardinals facility on Friday. "For me to be here, I am very thankful the Arizona organization believed in me.

"It's been a whirlwind of rides but I'm glad to be here." Williams, 6 feet 2 and 327 pounds, fills an immediate need for the Cardinals, who need a dynamic player at nose tackle. In the 3-4 defense, Williams' job will be to take on double teams and occupy space while others make most of the tackles. If the television show "Dirty Jobs" did a segment with an NFL theme, it would start with nose tackles. "What this does is give us a big, thick, squatty body and creates competition," defensive-line coach Ron Aiken said. "He uses up the 'A' gaps. That's what we're expecting nose tackles to do for us."

Williams will compete with Gabe Watson for the starting job, and Bryan Robinson, the starter the past two seasons, likely will not be re-signed. Though Williams played in a 4-3 defense in college, his transition to the Cardinals scheme shouldn't be that difficult, Aiken said. "He played in a scheme that has a 'one' technique, the exact same scheme that we play," Aiken said, "as far as being shaded on the center. He's done it before."
