|
| on 2010/8/15 8:00:00 (182 reads) |
(SkyNewswire.com) --- HarperOne announces today the launch of RamDassNow.com, a collaborative blog project celebrating a major publishing event: the 40th anniversary of the publication of Be Here Now, the first E-book edition of Be Here Now (October 2010), and the release of the highly anticipated third book in Ram Dass’ spiritual trilogy, Be Love Now (November 2010). Created by HarperOne as a destination for admirers, devotees, and friends of the spiritual guru, RamDassNow.com is a place for the community to reflect on his work, his life, and the impact he has made both personally and culturally.
Populated by seven participants ranging in age from their mid-20s to their mid-60s—each familiar with the 108 sacred pages of Be Here Now, and each having their own, unique experience with the text—the blog will reflect their progress as they mindfully make their way through Ram Dass’ culture-shifting work. These participants will offer daily updates as they read and reflect upon the 108 pages in just as many days, and several have already offered personal anecdotes about their experience with the project: “Be Here Now has continued to be a life changing book for me in ways that are difficult to put into words; but I will try my best, and I sincerely hope that I am able to share my gratitude, and lessons learned from Ram Dass with each of you.” – Jonathan F. Religious and Spirituality : World-Renowned Spiritual Guide and Counselor Henri Nouwen Reveals the Five Classical Stages of Spiritual Development in 'Spiritual Formation'
|
| on 2010/6/29 14:40:00 (100 reads) |
(SkyNewswire.com) --- Henri Nouwen understood the spiritual life as a journey of faith and transformation that is deepened by accountability, community, and relationships. Though he counseled many people during his lifetime, his principles of spiritual formation were never written down. Now, in SPIRITUAL FORMATION: Following the Movements of the Spirit (July 2010; HarperOne), Michael Christensen, one of Nouwen’s longtime students, and Rebecca Laird take his famous course in spiritual formation and supplement it with his unpublished writings to create the definitive series on Nouwen’s thoughts on the Christian life.
The first book in the series, SPIRITUAL DIRECTION, introduced readers to Nouwen’s core concepts and how to live the questions of the spiritual life. Now SPIRITUAL FORMATION reveals Nouwen’s sage advice on how to live out the five classical stages of spiritual development: * Awakening (our desire) * Purgation (purifying our passions) * Illumination (of God) * Dark Night (of the Soul) * Unification (with God)

Religious and Spirituality : Life Comes From Life By Aaqarsh Aiyyar
|
| on 2010/6/25 9:00:00 (81 reads) |
(SkyNewswire.com) --- 'Life comes from Life', as the title suggests, is an impromptu that asserts life can originate only from life and not from matter. It is an eye-opener for those who blindly trust the modern scientists. Srila Prabhupada is extremely critical of the scientists and their bogus claim that life evolved from matter. Dr. Singh has presented Prabhupada's conversation with his disciples during their routine morning walks in the Los Angeles area.
This stunning analysis exposes the shortcomings of the policies, theories, presumptions and fashionable doctrines of scientists concerning the origin and purpose of life. The readers get to read and enjoy a wide range of interesting topics such as the life on other planets, existence of universe, Darwinism, origin of nature, the origin of mystic power or Krishna, compassion, Bhagawat gita, consciousness, evolution of life, spiritual soul, symptoms of God, the space program, Gerontology, the mysterious yogic power and the absolute nature of God's love.

Religious and Spirituality : The Shroud of Turin is a Fake By Harvey Russell
|
| on 2010/6/23 18:20:00 (107 reads) |
(SkyNewswire.com) --- Many Roman Catholics always believed that the Shroud of Turin, kept in Turin Cathedral and is rarely displayed in public, bears the image of the crucified Christ. The findings of an Italian scientist may sway its authenticity yet again. In another attempt to prove that the Shroud is a fake, Italian scientist Luigi Garlaschelli reproduced the methods of how the Shroud was supposedly fabricated using techniques of the Middle Ages. Tests conducted about 20 years ago showed that the fabric was between 1260 and 1390, putting the making of the Shroud's during the Middle Ages. Although the Catholic Church neither maintains nor ignores the authenticity of the Shroud, the endorsement of Pope Piux XII in 1958 put the Shroud in association with the Churches devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus.
The linen cloth of the Shroud is 4.4 meters by 1.1 meters (14.4ft by 3.6ft) and is said to hold the true image of Christ. The Shroud bore the image of a man and has bloodstains in it, consistent with a crucified man. After several tests in 1998, scientists are still unable to determine how the image came to the cloth. Not until Luigi Garlaschelli came with an answer. He said that the results of his studies showed that making the Shroud during the Middle Ages requires inexpensive materials and is fairly easy to do. Luigi Garlaschelli is a professor of organic chemistry at the University of Pavia. The funds of his studies were from atheists and non-believers of the Shroud. Citing the methods used during the Middle Ages to create the shroud, he used the same pigment available during the time and applied them to the cloth.

Religious and Spirituality : Making Sense of Tongues by: Phillip Ross
|
| on 2010/6/20 17:40:00 (110 reads) |
(SkyNewswire.com) --- In 1 Corinthians 14 Paul has not only commanded believers to pursue love, but he has commanded us to desire what is spiritual, as well. So, we must ask whether human wants and desires can be commanded. Can people be commanded to want or desire a particular thing? Doesn't desire just well up from within a person? Can human desire be imposed by a command?
It is an interesting question. Most people believe that they are subject to their desires, rather than their desires being subject to them, subject to their willful control. If Scripture is to be believed and trusted, then the answer must be yes because Paul here commands believers to control their love and desire. Yet Paul was not content to leave it at that, but he adds further clarification. We are not only to chase after love with fervent passion, but we are to want what is spiritual. We are to desire the gift(s) that God has given us. We are to desire our own gifts and not chase after gifts that are not ours. By implication we are not to want or covet someone else's spiritual gifts. We are to want what God has given us. And most especially, said Paul, we should want to prophesy, by which he means to speak meaningfully about Scripture. Believers should especially want and engage this particular gift. The implication is that God has given this particular gift much more widely than most people think. Paul is calling it a common gift among believers, not a rare gift, an ordinary gift, not an extraordinary gift. Sure, some people will do it better than others, but all Christians are called to engage in meaningful explanation about God, Jesus and the Bible.

Religious and Spirituality : And You Shall Have Oil Until It Comes Out At Your Nostrils And It Becomes Loathsome Unto You
|
| on 2010/6/7 19:40:00 (414 reads) |
(SkyNewswire.com) --- Last year Americans grumbled over the high cost of oil. This year we have an overabundance of the crude. In fact, one could say that we have so much oil that it is coming out of our nostrils. This is not a new thing with the Creator. In times past, he dealt with the complaints of a whining people in like manner. Perhaps you have never heard the story. It goes like this:
In response to their fearful cries for food, God answered the complaints of the people by providing manna from heaven, a simple seed like substance that fell upon the morning dew, tasted as fresh oil, and was good for the making of cakes. An easier labor for food, no one could have asker. Yet the people never knew how to be satisfied with the simple provisions of God. In a time so short that one can barely conceive they sprang forth with a new moaning. They began to cry for meat, the call upon them like a great evil lusting. The Holy Spirit records it in this manner:

Religious and Spirituality : Sex shop to give away "Pope condoms"
|
| on 2010/6/3 14:40:00 (96 reads) |
(Reuters) --- A Dutch sex shop will be giving away 2,000 "Pope condoms" this weekend in a dig at the Roman Catholic Church.
Oddly Enough De Condoomfabriek (The Condom Factory) said it wanted to make a point about sexually transmitted diseases, unwanted pregnancies and the Vatican's opposition to contraceptives. The condom wrapper carries the image of a papal figure with an unmistakable general likeness to Pope Benedict, though the figure's face is removed. It bears the words "I SAID NO! We say YES!" framing the papal image.

Religious and Spirituality : AFRICA’S FREEMASONS A strange inheritance
|
| on 2010/5/30 7:39:37 (125 reads) |
(Prudent Press Agency)-- A European import, freemasonry is remarkably widespread in both French and English-speaking Africa, as it is in Latin America and the United States. Freemasonry is often to be found close to the centres of power. Simon Bolivar and President Roosevelt were both masons; and in Gabon, President Omar Bongo is their eminence grise. African freemasons often seek to act as mediators in the frequent crises accompanying the current democratisation of the continent.
In Congo-Brazzaville, the former president, Denis Sassou Nguesso, and his successor, Pascal Lissouba, are both freemasons, although they belong to different chapters of the order. Mr Lissouba is an initiate of the Grand Orient of France while Mr Sassou Nguesso belongs to a Senegalese lodge affiliated to the French Grand National Lodge. After the recent clashes of armed militia in the capital, French and African freemasons of the Grand Lodge of France, the United Grand Lodge of Côte d’Ivoire and the Grand Orients and United Lodges of Cameroon joined forces in an attempt to restore peace, though their efforts have not so far met with success. This is, nevertheless, a revealing instance of the freemasons’ influence in French-speaking Africa.

Religious and Spirituality : Art of Meditation: a Relaxing Meditation Course in San Jose, CA
|
| on 2010/5/25 15:20:00 (645 reads) |
(SkyNewswire.com)--- The Art of Living Foundation (AOLF) announces a course with one of their Senior International teachers, Ms Sangeeta Jani. The course, called "the Art of Meditation," will teach a relaxing meditation technique which is easy to learn and easy to practice. The course will be held at the Holiday Inn, 1740 N First Street, San Jose, CA starting on June 5, 2010. According to the Foundation's website, millions have taken the course across the world. "This technique has changed my life and I am surprised at how easy it was to learn. I calm down and relax instantly when I practice the meditation" - says Elaine who took the course in Los Altos with another senior AOLF teacher, Denise Marcus.
"I travel a lot and the meditation has rid me of jet-lag. Unlike guided meditations, I can do this on my own, anywhere, anytime" - says Gary from Fremont, CA, who has taken the course a few years ago and practices regularly. "I have tried transcendental and mindful meditation. The Art of Meditation technique is something I have been able to stick to" - says Zhinhong, another participant.
The benefits of meditation have been well documented. A study at the University of Kentucky, found that meditation could offset the sluggishness of sleep deprivation better than a nap. Researchers found that even novice mediators improved their performance more after 40 minutes of meditation than after a 40-minute nap. Meditation helped even after a full night of sleep deprivation.

Religious and Spirituality : In the Newly Published Novel by Paul Xylinides, the Pope Canonizes a Homosexual Priest
|
| on 2010/5/24 8:00:00 (98 reads) |
(SkyNewswire.com)--- In the newly published novel The Confessor-Designate, by Paul Xylinides, a fictional Pope determines to have canonized a homosexual priest from the 1600's in order to advance the Church's relevance in the 21st century. The theological argument for such a step is a history of making saints of those who were once womanizers and prostitutes, in other words, it is not how one begins one's life but how one ends it that counts. The story follows the relationship of the nun and priest who are conscripted in this cause, the tragedy that befalls them (and the efforts of the police in this regard), the events in the life of the candidate for canonization that have brought him to such notice, and it shows the machinations in Rome that underlie the effort. Paul Xylinides is a Montreal writer where much of the story is set, it also takes place in Rome and 17th century France and North America. http://www.theconfessor-designate.com

(SkyNewswire.com)--- The South Bend/Mishawaka Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) is pleased welcome the 22nd annual National Conference on Medjugorje, being held May 21-23 at the University of Notre Dame Joyce Center. Medjugorje, a small village in Bosnia, first drew worldwide attention when the Blessed Virgin Mary began appearing daily to six young people on June 24, 1981. The messages of Our Lady of Medjugorje regard the necessity of faith, prayer, conversion and fasting as preconditions for peace and salvation of the world. The ongoing apparitions are now in their 28th year, and Medjugorje has become one of the best-known and most visited places of pilgrimage in the Catholic world. This year's National Medjugorje Conference will bring together an array of inspirational speakers who will give powerful testimonies of how their lives have been changed by the call of Our Lady at Medjugorje.
Approximately 1,200-1,400 attendees are expected to travel to South Bend from across the United States. "It is always a pleasure to welcome visitors to South Bend, especially those who have attended the National Conference on Medjugorje many times," said Carolyne Wallace, director of sales for the South Bend/Mishawaka Convention and Visitors Bureau." We appreciate the efforts and hard work Queen of Peace Ministries puts forth to present an inspirational and successful conference each year." The conference begins on Friday evening, May 21, at 7:00 p.m. and ends at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday. On-site registration begins on Friday at 5:00 p.m. at Gate 8 of the Joyce Center. Housing for conference attendees is available in the dormitories at Notre Dame. For reservations call 574.631.6691. For conference information contact Queen of Peace Ministries at P.O. Ivanka Elez was the first to see Our Lady on the side of Mt. Podbrdo when the events of Medjugorje started on June 24, 1981. Her words, “Look Mirjana, Gospa!”, have echoed throughout the world for the last 29 years. She has received all ten secrets revealed by Our Lady and no longer has a daily apparition, but she does see Our Lady once a year on June 25th. Her special mission is to pray for families. Ivanka and her husband, Rajko, have three children and live in Medjugorje.
